Healthy eating often conjures up images of lettuce and lentils, or dreary boring food which you are told is good for you, but is no fun to eat. This isn't necessarily what healthy eating is about, what it is about is feeling well and keeping fit. As stated by Cole-Hamilton et al (1987) 'In the UK nearly four out of every ten men and over three out of every ten women are overweightIt is a result of eating too much of the wrong sorts of foods. People who are overweight are more likely to become ill as they get older than those who are not'. There is a close relationship between a healthy diet and a healthy life, and 'scientific evidence continues to accumulate supporting the important role of diet in the development of the most common causes of premature death in developed countries' WHO technical Report Series 797 (1990).
The emergence of Chronic Diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, various cancers, gallstones, dental caries, gastrointestinal disorder and bone and joint diseases are all more likely to occur if you aren't following a healthy eating plan. It is important that we get the balance right between the amount and the type of foods we eat and this will change for every person. All food contains nutrients, but they all contain different ones, this means that we need to eat a variety of foods to get all the nutrients we need for good health. A recipe for good health should contain the following nutrients, protein, starch and sugar, fats and oils, vitamins and minerals, water and fibre.
Overloading on some of these nutrients will lead to health problems...
