“I am very bothered” by Simon Armitage and “How do I love thee” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning are both poems written about love but written from two completely different points of view. “I am very bothered” was written in the late 20th century and “How do I love thee” was written in the mid 19th century so there is much to compare and contrast.

“How do I love thee” is a poem explaining the ways in which the person in the poem loves someone else. “I am very bothered” tells the reader how as a young boy he tormented the girl in his class he thought he used to love. ... However “I am very bothered” is looking back on his past but “How do I love thee” is mainly looking to the future. Both poems cover a lot of very important ideas; maybe one of the most important ideas that arises in these two poems is that of love.

They use different styles to convey the feeling of love. “How do I love thee” is written with intense feeling and passion ‘I love thee purely’. It uses ‘I love thee’ many times, which implies to the reader strong love as they are constantly reminded of it. However in “I am very bothered” the word love is not used once. Its uses ambiguity to cover its true meaning while “How do I love thee” has no hidden meaning and covers all aspects of love. ... “How do I love thee” states ‘I love thee…with my childhoods faith.’ As a child you are trusting and give unconditional love and do not question anything. “How do I love thee uses this description of love to show that the narrator of the poem will love this person forever.
