The Cassandra Compact
The Cassandra Compact by Robert Ludlum follows Covert-One operative Jon Smith in a mission to find a strain of stolen smallpox. Covert-one receives an urgent message from Yuri Danko, an officer in the medical division of Russia's security service, to extract him from Russia. Jon is sent to meet him in Italy and accompany him home. Before Yuri can pass his vital knowledge onto Jon, he is shot and killed by assassins. Jon chases after the assassins, only to find that they too are killed. Jon's British counterpart, Peter Howell, manages to get Yuri's papers, and together they soon discover that Yuri had uncovered a plan for the smallpox virus to be stolen from the Bioaparat complex in Russia by a Serbian terrorist. Despite all efforts made by Covert-one, and both the America and Russian governments, Yardini manages to steal the virus from Bioaparat, and the smallpox is soon on its way to the United States. Since it is completely eradicated, smallpox is a deadly virus, and released upon the human population, it could easily cause an epidemic of unheard of proportions. There would not be enough vaccine to save the population.
