"Oedipus the King"
One Man's Fate
"Oedipus the King" written by Robert Fagles is about how one human becomes slave of his determined fate. The main character Oedipus as a child, he was abandoned by his parents the king and queen of Thebes. To avoid the prophecy of Oedipus killing his father and marrying his mother, Laius and Jocasta parents of Oedipus instruct a servant to leave him on a mountain to die. The servant felt pity on him and he handed to a shepherd who handed him over to the King and Queen of Corinth. Growing up, Oedipus learned from an oracle about his fate. To avoid this terrifying fate Oedipus leaves Corinth forever. Although without him knowing his fate follows him along. On his travel, Oedipus found his way blocked by a chariot at a crossroads. Being young and angry, he kills the servants and the passenger who is Oedipus's real father. To fulfill the prophecy, he solves the riddle and as a reward he takes dead king's wife Jocasta hand in marriage...
