Padua and the Renaissance
The word Renaissance literally means "rebirth." This term is not a misnomer. The Renaissance, from 1300-1550, was a period of rebirth in classical learning and culture. There were new interests in science, literature, history, architecture, classical antiquity, and most prominently art. The Renaissance originated in Florence, Italy and spread throughout its entire borders and eventually to the rest of the world. Most of Italy's cities were strongly influenced by this poignant time period. In Padua, the Renaissance was greatly reflected through magnificent masterpieces produced by the most talented and brilliant artists. These artists include Andrea Mantegna, Tusuabi Vecellio, Donatello, and Giotto, only 4 of the myriad of artists recognized in the Renaissance.
