INTERVIEW WITH A PARENT OF A CHILD WITH A DISABILITY
The parent that I chose to interview was a fellow classmate by the name of Cheryl S.
Cheryl related many of the experiences that she had while trying to get her son the help he needed during his preschool years and thru his beginning school years.
Cheryl's son was diagnosed with a hearing impairment at 1 month old and was unable to hear until medical intervention at the age of three. Because of his inability to hear normally, it caused a delay in his speech and language development. At age 3, an IEP (individualized education plan) was developed for Cheryl's son that placed him strictly in an I.D.E.A. category of speech & language impairment, not hearing impaired. According to Cheryl, the school district would not accept her son's prior medical records and results of prior hearing exams as proof of the hearing loss...
