"The Iks"
Lewis Thomas wrote an essay on a small tribe called the Iks. This was one of the many things that Thomas did in his life. The Iks were nomads who hunted and gathered in the mountainous valleys of Uganda. Their lives were torn apart by the government which turned their land into a national park. The dismantling of the Ik culture caused some very peculiar behaviors among the tribe members. An anthropologist followed the tribe around for two years in order to write a book about them. The author of the book interpreted the Iks as selfish, unattached creatures. Lewis Thomas comes to realize that the Ik culture can teach us many things when compared to the self-centered relationships between nations.
