Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication
Words, sentences, conversations, eye contact, hand gestures, and posture may not have an obvious connection, but they do. Communication is something used by everyone, everyday. For example, everyday conversation, which are words or information exchanged between two or more persons for either personal or professional reasons, are a well known form of communication. The most basic and obvious form of communication is the verbal, spoken language, which is also done consciously, or done with our knowledge. Non-verbal communication is mostly done unconsciously, or without knowledge. Non-verbal communication or body language, are actions and gestures that are placed with verbal communication that illustrate what is being spoken. Both contribute greatly to the others success. To explain, while listening to an hour lecture from a World History professor his voice was monotone, one constant pitch with no emphasis, his hands were straight to his sides, no eye contact was made, and his facial expressions remained serious the entire lecture. Most people would last about fifteen minutes before falling asleep. On the other hand, an hour lecture in World History from a professor whose inflection, tone and pitch, varied throughout the lecture, used his hands to illustrate what was being said, involved the class by making eye contact, and varied his facial expressions based on what he was describing, would definitely help student want to learn about World History...
