In A Lesson Before Dying, written by Ernest J. Gaines, many terrible things happened to one innocent human. In the beginning of the novel Jefferson a young black man, was in the wrong place at the wrong time. At the time, he was at a general store where three people were killed. With no witnesses, everyone dead, and Jefferson the only person left, the only conclusion the jury could come up with was that he murdered them all and robbed the store. In court his defense attorney said, "Gentlemen of the jury, be merciful. He is innocent of all charges brought up against him. But let us say he was not. Let us say for a moment say he was not. What justice would betake this life?..
