In doing research on the influence of television in the lives of our children, I found two articles that have to deal with the violence on television and the reaction that children had. ... 5 hours of television per day by the time they enter elementary school, increase their viewing to almost 4 hours per day by early adolescence and average somewhere between 3 and 4 hours during their teenage years…The average American child have witnessed 8,000 murders and more than 100,000 other acts of violence by the time they had graduated from elementary school. ... Henceforth drawing the conclusion that watching violent shows causes one to become immune to violence. ... ”
Another article found in the “Journal of Psychology entitled Children’s Attitudes towards Violence on Television,” had to do with much of the same subject as the previous article. ... The conclusion stated, “It seems likely that any relationship that may exist between watching of television violence and perpetration of actual violence is likely to be a complex one and a number of contributing factors must be considered…Children who spend more time watching television, especially violent programs, are also more likely to show later aggression, restlessness, and belief in a “scary world. ... Both of the authors seemed to come to the same conclusion that children exposed to more violent television programming seem to be more violent, or aggressive themselves, and less affected by violence around them. ... The first article seems to hold to blaming television violence for all this aggression in young children, where as the second article brings up several other factors. ...
Another topic that is brought up in the second article is the difference between young boys and girls in their viewing habits and in their response to violence on television. ... I believe that many acts of violence that are committed by today’s youth has a lot to do with what ideology is shown on television, especially that ideology of how Americans view violence.
