While expanding and growing is one of a nation's requirements to succeed, the idea of manifest destiny is downright imperialistic. Manifest Destiny is the belief that United States had the right and duty to expand throughout the North American continent. This, however, was not done in the best interest of others; even though the majority of the United States population thought it otherwise.
Imperialism is defined as the policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political hegemony over other nations. That is exactly what Manifest Destiny is as well. The United States government acquired the territory and then presents a predominant influence of either religion, government, or both. It becomes blatantly obvious, the intent of a country when the definition of a hated process, such as imperialism, is concurrent with that of ones own idea for expansion. Thousands of man, women, and children suffered for our belief that we had a right to conquer all the land in North America.
Also, the United States, under the belief of Manifest Destiny, government took away all the rights and freedoms that the conquered people have. This is most easily seen in the case of the American Indians...
