VSEPR

As you know, one can predict the shape and some properties of molecules by using 2 simple rules of thumb: 1) Atoms and lone pairs of electrons take up space 2) In a molecule or ion, atoms and lone pairs orient themselves in space to give everything the most possible room. These simple rules have been codified as Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion theory (VSEPR). BEFORE YOU COME TO LAB, READ pp 60-66 in Munowitz on VSEPR. While you are waiting for the IR, complete the following questions for each molecule or ion listed. 1a. Hydronium ion, Give formula: H3O+, Give total # of valence electrons: 8 e-. Its 3-D shape is: tetrahedral (pyramidal) , Its bond angles are: „£ 109.50 , Its bonds are: O „² H bonds polar, The whole molecule is polar / nonpolar (It‘¦s charged). It looks like: 1. NH3 Give NAME: __ammonia______________________: Give total # of valence electrons: __8____ Its 3-D shape is: __tetrahedral (pyramidal if you ignore lone pairs)________________ Its bond angles are: _„£ 109.50 ________________ Its bonds are: _Polar/nonpolar (circle one) The whole molecule is polar / nonpolar (Circle one) Is it a weak acid or a weak base (Circle one)? Write the net ionic reaction of NH3 and water. ____NH3 + H2O „³ NH4+ + OH- It looks like: 2. Ammonium ion Give FORMULA: _____NH4+___________________: Give total # of valence electrons: ____8__ Its 3-D shape is: _______Tetrahedral___________ Its bond angles are: ______„£ 109.50 ____________ Its bonds are: Polar/nonpolar (circle one)_______polar____________ The whole molecule is polar / nonpolar (circle one)_____polar______________ Is it a weak acid or a weak base (Circle one)?
