What is a subsidy?
Webster's dictionary defines the economic term subsidy as a grant by a government to a private person or company to assist an enterprise deemed advantageous to the public. The American government subsidizes many things, one of them being the farm industry. The US gives about $18.7 billion per fiscal year in farm subsidies. The money tends to go to the richest agricultural corporations and little seems to get to the small farmers. Subsidies work in many different ways...
