Organic foods have taken the world by storm in recent years as more people become aware of the connection between the foods that they eat, their health, and the well-being of the environment. But why does organic food cost so much?
Organic foods are grown and processed according to an agricultural method known as organic farming. Unlike conventional farming, which controls pests using synthetic chemicals, organic farmers try to optimize the plant's own natural defenses against disease, by building up a rich soil overflowing with life-giving nutrients. But the question is what is so special with organic food and why does it cost so much more.
It's unfortunate that organic products are more expensive, when they offer so many benefits to consumers, farmers, and future generations. Organic farming is much more labor intensive than commercial farming, so production costs are higher. Most organic farms are small scale and widely dispersed farms without centralized packaging facilities, which drives up the cost of organic food. Most importantly, organic farmers do not receive the same level of subsidization from the government as commercial farmers.
