Why were Christians who died at the hands of the Romans called
martyrs?
The Christians put to death by the Romans achieved Martyrdom because they died for their belief, cause, or principle. But does this truly mean they are Martyr's? Well, from the American Heritage Dictionary
it states a Martyr is "one who chooses to suffer death rather than renounce religious principles." Also, "one who makes great sacrifices or suffers much in order to further a belief, cause, or principle." I do believe Christians who died at the hands of the Romans were called martyrs because of suffering and dying for what they believed in. But I think it had to do with a little more than that. From reading The Martyrdom of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas I've come to find out why Perpetua was a martyr.
