For women who smoke ten cigarettes a day, their children have twice the risk of developing asthma as the children of non-smokers. A mother's smoking during pregnancy and after her child's birth increases the baby's risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. There is also a direct connection between the amount of smoking during pregnancy and miscarriage. Women who smoke while pregnant have 25-50 percent more fetal deaths. The good news is that stopping smoking before becoming pregnant or very early in the pregnancy reduces the rates of low birthweight and fetal death to almost the same as babies born to non-smokers! Use of other drugs during pregnancy can also affect the babies of the users. Pregnant women who use marijuana, heroin, crack, cocaine and many other drugs can have babies who are addicted and must go through withdrawal.
