It has been estimated that over 1,500 structures will be destroyed by coastal erosion each year in the United States. Many of these are houses filled with lifetimes of memories that will be swept away by the winds and waters of Mother Nature. In many places, such as here on Cape Cod, this problem has been sustained in large part by homeowners, with little attention from the government and it's agencies. It is time for the state and federal governments to address this situation, and find some remedies and solutions for homeowners.
Beach erosion, coastal dune erosion, and wind erosion are three different yet serious problems faces by homeowners and beachgoers all along the coasts of Massachusetts. Each of these problems presents negative effects on residents and nature life, but the most serious in the eyes of coastal residents is beach erosion. Beach erosion is where the sand of the beach and the land behind the beach are washed away by the strong forces of the water crashing against them. Over time the sand, dirt, rocks and other debris is carried away and deposited in other locations. This continual process leaves a smaller beach for sunbathers and swimmers, and smaller backyards for nearby residents. Eventually the shoreline will retreat far enough requiring the house be condemned, or, even worse, allowing the house to fall into the ocean...
