The Pride and Prejudice of Elizabeth Bennet
Elizabeth Bennet, the heroine of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, is an authentic character, allowing readers to identify, sympathize, and grow with her. In effect, Elizabeth represents both aspects of the novel's title, being both proud and prejudicial. However, it is not these factors that endear her to the reader, rather it is the depth of her character in that she develops into a more level-minded person with a rare capability for self-awareness.
Elizabeth is a spirited character. She has a playful and lighthearted disposition. She is confident, loyal, clever and funny. She found delight those things that were seen ridiculous, which included an insult to her beauty. Elizabeth is also portrayed as a skeptic. This particular quality in evident in the surprise she expresses in her sister's tendency to look at people through rose colored glasses. This contradicts Elizabeth's quickness to make judgments and just as quickly to hold fast to those preconceptions as we see in her attitudes towards Darcy...
