George Eliot was an excellent writer who based many of her books on her own childhood. She was born as Mary Ann Evans in South Farm Arbury on November 22, 1819. Her parents were Robert and Christina Pearson Evans. Her Father was an estate agent for Frances Newdigate, a man who was widely respected for his intelligence, his scrupulous judgment, his physical strength, and his versatility as a carpenter, surveyor, road builder, and land appraiser. Her father had two children from a previous marriage. Mary Ann had four siblings. Robert, Francis, Christina and Isaac. Isaac was her main childhood friend. Robert and Francis, whom she was always on good terms with, lived in a neighboring county, and helped her father manage property.
