In 1965, Bruce Tuckman of the Naval Medical Research Institute published the results of his study of 55 groups who were brought together to form teams Patnode (2003). The purpose of the study was to identify common themes. His findings uncovered four developmental stages shared by all 55 groups. As a result of the study, Tuckman proposed a four-step model for how high function groups and teams are formed. He categorized them as forming, storming, norming and performing. Tuckman's model is the most commonly accepted model of the stages of development that teams progress through. This paper attempts to provide insight into each stage of team development.
The first stage in the four-stage model is forming. This is the stage where people who have been selected to participate on the team first meet.
