Annie Bethal Bannister was born February 6 1882 in Henry County Virginia. Her parents divorced at the age of five and she moved to Bramwell West Virginia with her mother. At age 11, her father threatened to take Annie away if she did not receive an education. Her mother then enrolled Annie into Virginia Seminary School which was located in Lynchburg. Annie was the youngest student to ever attend school there. While attending Virginia Seminary, she hired fellow student Edward Spencer to tutor her. Annie graduated in 1899 and gave the valedictory address. She then moved to West Virginia where she taught for two years. After she taught, she moved back to Lynchburg and Married Edward Spencer, they had three children together.
