The issue of abortion is a fiercely debated topic in various communities throughout the world, none more so than within the Christian Churches. This is the response of two mainstream Christian Churches to the issue of abortion.
It may surprise many of you to know that there are approximately 1800 fatalities per year on Australian roads, but in comparison to Australian abortion clinics, this figure is not bad. Unbelievably, in just seven days an abortion clinic would easily meet that number. It is the practice of abortion, whether in ancient or modern times, that has posed a moral challenge to Christianity. The common belief has been that abortion is the murder of an innocent life and the prevention of God's will. Abortion was so unthinkable among Hebrews that no special mention of it was necessary in the
Old Testament criminal code. God said "You shall not murder," and that was enough. However, different branches of the Christian faith have somewhat varying and different beliefs on this issue. The Roman Catholic and the Uniting Church
