Although Karl Marx was very disliked in his time by governments and his opposition, his contribution to society is enormous. Marx is known for proposing that the excesses of capitalism would lead to conflict between the lower and middle classes.
Marx's ideas and theories came to be known as Marxism, or scientific socialism. His analysis of capitalist economy and his theories of historical materialism, the class struggle, and surplus value have become the basis of modern socialist doctrine. Of decisive importance with respect to revolutionary action are his theories on the nature of the capitalist state, the road to power, and the dictatorship of the proletariat (Encarta).
Karl Marx was born on the Moselle River in Germany on May 5, 1818. At the age of seventeen, Marx enrolled at the University of Bonn. At Boon he became engaged to Jenny Von Westphalen, the daughter of Baron von Westphalen. Baron was responsible for introducing romantic literature and Saint-Simonian politics to Marx.
