While you may not feel the presence of your baby yet, it is important to do all you can to keep yourself and your baby healthy during pregnancy. Keep a healthy, balanced diet. Increase your calorie intake by 10 to 20 percent in order to meet your baby's needs. Expect to gain 25 to 35 lbs. during pregnancy, but stay moderately active as well. Some exercises that are great for pregnant women are walking, swimming or practicing yoga.
Proteins, vitamins and minerals are vital to your baby's health. One of the most important of these is folic acid, a B vitamin, which is crucial for the baby's nervous system to develop properly. If you have not already gotten enough folic acid, your baby is at risk for spina bifida, a disorder in which the baby's neural tube does not close properly during the first month of pregnancy.
