“The United States entered the First World War not ‘to make the world safe for democracy’ as president Wilson claimed, but to safeguard American economic interests.” Assess the validity of this statement. The United States’ reasons for entering World War I incorporated both the safeguarding of American economic interests and making the world safe for democracy. These two motives tie together from the various events and situations that the United States was put in. The early economic links with the British and the French, the German’s submarine warfare and the Russian Revolution all attributed to America’s declaration for war. Each of them are connected to each other, leading to both the protecting America’s economic assets and making the world safe for democracy.
