Prejudice, Stereotyping, And Discrimination
Minority groups, groups of people who for the most part have less control and influence over their own lives than those of dominant groups, in the U.S. have and still suffer the social and economic consequences of oppression. Three factors which embody this oppression are the concepts of prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination. These concepts make those related to minorities subject to the bias and bigotry of dominant groups.
The concept of prejudice consists of negative judgements about a member of a particular group based solely on that persons association with the group. These negative evaluations have nothing really to do with the characteristics of the individual but more with the traits of the particular group. For example, when a person is evaluated by the color of their skin but not by specific characteristics or abilities and then judged as that kind of person, the evaluator embodies a prejudice. As a result of prejudice, minorities, majorities, and well everybody suffers a social consequence for the reason that attention stops at the color of skin or at the gender of a person. From the economic standpoint, minorities suffer the prejudice of the dominant group employer who doesn't recognize the personal characteristics or abilities of a particular minority member...
