The Romantic period was a period of changes in the composition of melody and music. The styles used mimicked the sounds of the classical period, but with more sense of individuality and dynamics. This period of music is can be centralized in one part of the world, Leipzig, Germany; where most of the more famous composers like Schumann studied music. The Romantic period was a time for new life in piano music, although staying true to its classic roots with Bach and Mozart. There was a great sense of nationalism during this period, which prompted the creation of many nationalistic pieces, like The Moldau by Smetana, the founder of nationalistic music in Czechoslovakia. Program music also became a major part of this period in history, which is music that tells or is closely related to a story. The piece Erlkonig by Schubert tells the story of a father trying to keep his son safe from the evil clutches of a fairy trying to take the boy away. The Romantic period was a time of story telling and story making, changing the way the world looks at composers as not just musicians, but artists as well.In American history, decisions are made in an instant.
