A Review of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra
I attended the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra's performance of Berloiz's Romeo et Juliet. It was written by Hector Berloiz (1803-1869) during the Romantic period (1825-1900) to pay homage to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Not only was this concert performed by classical instruments, but a full choir as well. This combination tells the story of Shakespeare's play with well written music and vocal accompaniment.
The stage was completely full, with nearly every inch occupied by a musician. In the middle-front of the stage stood Guillermo Figueroa, the music director of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. To his left and right were the strings sections, including violins, violas, cellos, and the harp. Located in front of the director were the woodwinds and brasses, including the flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone. The choir, composed of many singers, stood at the back of the stage.
