We all have someone elderly in our lives. Whether they live in another state, just across town, or in our guest bedroom, we are affected by them. One author, Bernard Sloan, expresses his disgust with the elderly population in his extremely opinionated essay (article), "Old Folks at Home". He stubbornly states that most elderly are not "victims" of uncaring family members, as he thought at one time, but rather bitter old people who drive their families away. He supports his claim with many accounts of personal experience.
Initially, Sloan dictates a series of distasteful situations in which a few of his colleagues and friends found themselves in regarding their parents as extended houseguests.
First, in these briefly mentioned cases, it is doubtful that we have been told all the facts of these situations. Sloan himself is only aware of one side of the story. He hears a colleague venting at the water fountain or a friend when they are most emotional about the situation and takes these fragile stories as solid truth? Undoubtedly, these people are having trouble at home, but how often do you get the whole truth from a person wishing to look like the victim of tragic circumstances?..
