Consumerism in American Culture
Consumerism is a major technological theme in Neal Stephenson's novel, Snow Crash. Technological innovations are developing in Capitalist America at an exponentially growing rate. This technological development, largely commercially exploited, has driven Americans to Consumerism. The lives of individuals and groups have been transformed by the growth of consumerism through the rapid pace of technological change. This change has had a great impact on American culture; social behavior, thought and our existing communities.
Consumerism is the belief that the individual will be gratified through consumption. Technological developments have allowed America to produce new and improved products. Our society encourages this technological development, (which fosters even greater consumerism), because we believe technology to be synonymous with progress and therefore, beneficial. This leads to a vicious circle: Americans believe that technological progress is good; therefore, we produce more than ever.
