1. How does Grendel come to know his own existence? (chronologically)
The phases Grendel demonstrates through the book which lead him to his own existence are: solipsism, skepticism, nihilism, and empiricism. The first phase solipsism is the belief that the self is the only reality, the only thing that can be known and verified. Solipsism becomes evident when Grendel states "I create the whole universe, blink by blink." (22). Grendel denies the existence of everything around him and claims "I alone exist" (22). The Shaper's songs force Grendel to question his solipsism, forces him to become aware of exterior reality. In chapter 6, Grendel changes from solipsism to skepticism, belief that real knowledge is impossible. Grendel believes everything leads men further away from reality, "So much for heroism...
