Canada may have gained their independence from the British Empire on June 1, 1867, but it was World War one that saw Canada emerge as a separate nation. World war one, referred to as the Great War, seriously shaped Canada and the way in which Canada viewed the world. Prewar Canada could be compared to an eager teenager, ready to take a large step in to the world. But this eagerness would soon be lost. The war taught Canada not to be such a follower, and also that we must put our interests first. Even though there were huger losses suffered in the war, it did show the world that Canada was a player in world affairs. Of a population of eight hundred thousand people in 1914, over sixty three thousand were involve in the fighting Canadian military. That is approximately eight percent of the population of Canada. The war would put Canada on the map, so to speak. By the end Canada emerged as an independent nation worthy of world respect...
