In a film class I took last semester I learned that the medium of film offers a unique opportunity to study character’s thoughts and gives added meaning to the work which it is taken from. The film Hamlet, starring Mel Gibson, accurately portrays the play of Shakespeare, as well as offers insight into the character’s minds that is not available in reading the play. The many aspects of filmmaking used throughout the film gives added meaning to characters and new insights into their actions and motives. I enjoyed reading the play, but there is something about watching it that gives it more meaning and clarity. The character of Hamlet is an extremely complex one that takes great skill on the part of the actor to accurately portray him. Mel Gibson does a wonderful job of showing the madness and clarity of Hamlet throughout the film. He shows such passion and grief at his father’s death. He also shows rage at times and a cleaver since of wit when speaking with Polonius. Hamlet’s emotions stretch over a wide range throughout the film and Gibson does a superb job of showing each of them. When he sees his father’s ghost for the first time Gibson portrays him as being almost terrified, which is something that I never thought of when reading the play. It is logical that he would be scared, but I had never thought about it until I watched the film. Gibson also shows Hamlet as being somewhat violent, especially with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. I never pictured him doing the things he did to them. After watching the film it makes since that he would be a little rough with them if they were spying on him. Mel does a phenomenal job in playing a difficult character in this film. Other characters were well portrayed in the film. The actress really shows the carnal side of her love with Claudius, as well as her need for a man figure to tell her what to do.
