In "The Thunder Rolls," it is clear that it is about a man and woman who are more than likely married. No hints are given as to what race the characters are, but a few physical attributes are identified. The woman is wearing a faded flannel gown and the man shows up with a strange new perfume. What is obviously a man's voice, Garth Brooks is the artist singing the song.
Emotions are expressed by both characters throughout the song. The beginning of the song starts out with the wife worrying about her husband and why he hasn't returned home by "three thirty in the morning." This feeling of being worried and troubled by something is symbolized by the thunder heard at the start of the song. At the same time, the wife is suspicious of her husband. "Askin for a miracle, hopin she's not right. Prayin it's the weather, that's kept him out all night...
