Electrons and Electromagnets Jason Gragg
Introduction: Magnetism in metals results from relationships among the electrons the surround the nuclei in the atoms of the metal. The greater the number of electrons spinning in one direction, the greater the magnetic behavior of the metal. Research has shown that a thin layer of iron, one atom thick, can produce a stronger magnetic field than a thicker layer of iron. How many paper clips will an electro magnet pick up when a different number of nails are used each time? If a differnt number of nails are used to pick up paper clips than the number of paper clips will not change depending on the number of nails but rather how well together the batteries are pushed together and how much room you have to put the paper clips on the nail. In each trial there will be a different number of nails but the same amount of energy will be given to the number of nails.
Materials:
Two d batteries
Wire
Paper Clips
Nails
Tape
Procedure: First you need to get two d batteries and some wire. Attach one end of the wire to the positive side of one battery and the other end of the wire to the negative side of the other battery. Tape the wire to the batteries. Then wrap nails in the wire to send a charge through the nails...
