The Pendulum Experiment
What is a pendulum?
A pendulum is a device consisting of an object suspended from a fixed point that swings back and forth under the influence of gravity. Pendulums are used in several types of devices; for example some clocks use pendulums. (source: Microsoft Encarta).
Purpose
My purpose was to determine if the length of a pendulum had any effect on the speed in which it would swing. The independent variable was the length of the pendulum or string, and the dependent variable was the number of pendulum swings in 30 seconds.
The Experiment
I used three lengths of string; 30, 15, and 7.5 inches. I tied each string to a 0.5 oz washer and the other end to a yard stick hanging over a kitchen counter...
