Computer Facilities:
The Departmental computer laboratory has 486, pentium, and Macintosh personal computers, Sun 4/390 and 470 SPARCservers, a Micro VAX 3100, 3 VAX terminals, 3 SPARC stations, 2 laser printers, and several plotters and digitizing tablets. All computer equipment is linked to the department and to the university LAN. cluster or connected throughout the department. Electronic mail and World Wide Web access are available.
Laboratory Facilities:
The Department's equipment, valued at $3.5 million, includes the basic items necessary for sound geological and geophysical research and teaching. These facilities include a fully equipped sedimentation laboratory, sedimentary-petrology laboratory, paleontological laboratory, low-temperature geochemistry laboratory, electron-microprobe laboratory, scanning electron-microscopy laboratory, microprobe/SEM-preparation laboratory, X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence laboratory, optical mineralogy/petrology laboratory, image-processing laboratory, heavy-mineral separation laboratory, and rock preparation/thin-section laboratory. Two darkrooms are available with standard photographic, developing, and printing equipment. Geophysics laboratory and field equipment includes everything necessary to collect, process, and interpret gravity, magnetic, and seismic reflection and refraction data. Two 15-passenger Dodge vans, one 12-passenger Ford vans, an Isuzu 4-wheel drive Trooper, and a 14-foot Achilles inflatable boat with a 25hp Yamaha outboard are available for field travel...
