Deviance through Socialization
Jack Henry Abbot led a very controversial life. He was an extreme character who was very different and sometimes deviant. From reading the novel, In the Belly of the Beast, one can see that his thoughts, ideas, ways of expressing emotions, and the eyes in which he viewed the world are quite different from those who are living in society outside of prison. The way he tells stories and the way he views those whom he interacts with on a daily basis makes the reader wonder how exactly he became so deviant. How is it that Jack Abbot is so extremely different from anyone the reader has come in contact with before? Abbot's socialization through childhood, adolescence, and his years in prison drove him to become what he became. He is the result of his own experiences. He is the product of his socialization.
