Whether people's attitudes are determined more by their environment than by their genes has been a controversial issues in psychology for many years. Often known as the "nature vs. nurture" debate, some people, like behavorists, believe "nuture" or man's environment shapes his attitude, while others like cognitivists, believe man's attitudes are predetermined by nature or his inherited genes. Does our immediate environment have more influence in determining our attitudes than our internal makeup? This is a question that many psychologists have tried to answer. While both options inevitably have some significane in determing our attitudes, it seems more likely that our immediate surrounding or situation determines our attitudes more than any internal characteristic.
The chief reason for my view is that within the field of social psychology, many studies have been conducted whose results suggest that people's attitudes are easily manipulated by their environment. For example,
