Profile of an Advocate
For my informative speech, I aim to shed light on a neighborhood program that is doing its part to be an advocate in changing the fate of black urban youth. I interviewed Mrs. Juanita Suttle, Administrative Assistant for Curriculum and Magnet Coordinator at Booker T. Washington High School. In this interview I was able to get an inside look on their program and to inform you of it's mission, initiatives, and key components used to transition youth into college.
In my interview with Mrs. Suttle I started by asking her to identify critical issues that she thinks have historically led to a cycle of disadvantage for urban youth. This one question sparked our entire discussion as she exclaimed, "The breakdown in curriculum, in terms of basic skills for students in their earlier years, accounts for their poor performance and retention rates later on." She then went on to explain that most students from urban areas aren't given the same early advantages as other children, therefore they are handicapped in a lot of critical academic areas.
