A Doll's House

The play A Doll's House, by Henrick Ibsen, has a primary theme of the emancipation of a woman, Nora. Ibsen describes throughout the play the need for women's independence and the obligations the women feel to their family and to society. We can see that Nora's obligation to her husband is a strong one. Ibsen idea of a doll's house has some irony in the choice of its title, as Torvald treats Nora as a doll; they have a doll marriage like playing house. Nora struggles throughout the play to gain her independence, not only from Torvald but also from societal ideals of how women should act.
In Act I, there are hints to the kind of marriage Nora and Torvald have; Torvald tries to control every aspect of Nora's life. Torvald refers to Nora by many belittling names, "Come, come my little skylark must not droop her wings. What is this! Is my little squirrel out of temper?..
