The century began with children having virtually no rights, is ending with children having the most powerful legal instrument that not only recognizes but protects their human rights.
The human rights of children and the standards to which all governments must aspire in realizing the rights for all children. This is included in one international human rights treaty: The Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the first legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rights, civil and political rights, economic, social, and cultural rights.
The Convention was carefully drafted over the course of ten years(1979-1989) with the input of representatives from all societies, regions, and cultures. It has become the most widely accepted human rights treaty ever. It has been ratified by 192 countries. Only two countries did not agree to ratification. The Convention on the Rights of the Child had first to be approved, or adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and on the twentieth of November 1989, the governments represented at the General Assembly agreed to adopt the Convention into international law.
The Convention's four guiding principles are as follows: Non-discrimination (article 2), Best interests of the child (article 3), Survival and development (article 6), and Participation (article 12)...
