One must understand what eating disorders are in order to understand their causes. Eating Disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating include extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding weight and food issues. Bulimia Nervosa is characterized by a secretive cycle of binge eating followed by purging. Bulimia includes eating large amounts of food then getting rid of the food and calories through vomiting, laxative abuse, or over-exercising. Appearance-obsessed friends, family or romantic partners create pressure that encourages eating disorders. Parents who overvalue physical appearance can unwittingly contribute to an eating disorder. In a study done by The International Journal of Eating Disorders of anorexic patients taking the perspective of the causes of anorexia the most commonly mentioned perceived causes were dysfunctional families and perceived pressures from family and friends (Tozzi).
