Farmers -- Growing Our Future
Agriculture and Alabama--those two words just seem to go perfectly with each other. Where would Alabama be without agriculture? According to ALFA Farmers Federation, our economy would have to find an entirely new base and direction without it. They report that at least 48,000 people in Alabama call themselves farmers, and for generations those families have devoted their lives to generating a $4.7 billion business-- making it Alabama's largest. Today, agriculture goes much further than just the farm scene. More than $9 billion in annual earnings are generated from 470,000 jobs in Alabama's agribusiness industries. That is 21 percent of our state's workforce! In fact, 85 percent of all jobs created by agriculture are not on the farm. These businesses include equipment dealers, food processors, seed and feed suppliers, exporters, and retailers...
