In the past it has been debated, that depression and physical fitness are connected. Depression is defined as, "a psychoneurotic or psychotic disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty in thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal tendencies" (Merriam Webster Dictionary) and it is a very powerful disorder that has been drastically rising within the last couple of years. Both articles of study, Relations of Physical Fitness, body image, locus of control, depression, and self reported exercise in college women and me, and Exercise in Older Adults with Major Depression, gives direct evidence claiming that balanced exercise has been able to reduce depression and depression caused symptoms.
However there are certain circumstances, like gender issues, that pertain to the diagnosis of depression. 122 women and 136 men participated in a study, testing for physical fitness and "self relations"(Adam). For example, "For women, scores indicating more depression were associated with unhappiness with physical appearance... unhappiness with body appearance... feeling overweight, and overweight preoccupations"(Adam) while, "For men, higher depression scores were associated with lower physical fitness, lower amount of physical exercise...
