I do not agree with the view that "You can leave it to the United Nations to solve these problems. You and I are powerless to do anything." My reasons for taking such a stand are outlined below.
United Nations cannot always take action to provide solutions to issues such as landmines. Soldiers will naturally seek to defend their use of these mines which cause so much death and physical injury to civilians. Americans, for example, argues that it cannot police the border between North and South Korea without the use of landmines, which are cheap, easily used, and can be planted anywhere. It is because of these reasons that some countries cannot do without landmines, and will therefore not heeded likely calls at the United Nations for an international ban on landmines. States like Russia and China have stockpiles of landmines and refuse to get rid of them. Another country, Iraq, has ignored the ban on the manufacture and use of randomly destructive biological and chemical weapons.
Actions of individuals, however, can be of practical help...
