Having read through the poem several times it becomes increasingly apparent that the poet, speaking in the first person, is lamenting about how he and his lover cannot be together, due to the spiteful intentions of ‘Fate’. Throughout the poem there is a great deal of bitterness and hatred directed towards ‘Fate’, which becomes personified by the poet. In the opening lines of the poem the poet asserts that his love is the rarest, purest and most superior kind of love possible, thus attempting to intensify the cruel injustice of ‘Fate’. The personification of ‘Despair’ and ‘Hope’ is evident in the first two stanzas through the of use of capital letters at the beginning of the two words, giving them characterisation. The poet states that his love was “begotten” or created by ‘Despair’ suggesting that ‘Despair’ is almost like a father figure.
