Before discussing the origins of the renaissance, one must first be familiar with what exactly the term 'renaissance' means. Therefore, the term itself means 'rebirth', but the rebirth of what? The renaissance is considered a time of cultural rebirth. It occurred in Italy, and between the years 1330 and 1530, the city-states of the Italian peninsula emerged as the intellectual and artistic centres of Europe. It was an exciting time, during which classical texts were rediscovered and the arts, as well as architecture became a central focus. During this period people were fully conscious that they had entered a time of change. In fact it is true that they had entered the midst of an artistic and cultural phenomonen.
To say that the origins of the Renaissance were steeped in the artistic and cultural spheres would be giving a rather narrow perspective of this era. Art and culture are only two pieces which complete the jigsaw of the renaissance, there are many more underlying pieces which need to be discussed and teased out. It is true to say that the Renaissance was the 'Golden era', resulting in the revival of the arts, intellect and culture...
