The primary reason that seat belts save lives has to do with the physics of mechanical forces produced during an accident. Sir Isaac Newton's first law states that an object in motion will tend to stay in motion. This is for the human body as well as objects. If you are traveling at 55 miles per hour when you have a collision without your seat belt your body will continue to move forward into the steering wheel, the dashboard, the window, or the back of the seat at 55 miles per hour. Wearing your seat belt is the single most effective way we can save lives and reduce injuries on Americas roadways.
Failure to wear a seat belt contributes to more fatalities than any other single traffic related behavior.
Seat belts are the most effective safety devices in vehicles.
63% of people killed in car accidents in 2001 were not wearing seat belts.
Seat belts are estimated to save 9,500 lives each year.
