For many American's, the Suburban American life is a dream. However, the movie 'American Beauty', directed by Sam Mendes which stars Kevin Spacey, and Annette Bening, portrays the root causes of social decay in America suburbia. The movie, which focuses mostly on one suburban family, shows at first what appears to be your 'ideal' family with a white picket fence, a beautiful neighborhood, a nice house, and a nuclear family. However, as the movie progresses, you learn that on the inside this family has many social problems.
The movie portrays many causes to social decay including interruptions in the socialization process in the family, school, and in the youth subculture. In an effort to examine these roles of socialization, I will attempt to analyze what effects these three agents of socialization had on the contribution of crime and violence in the move 'American Beauty'. By analyzing these roles of socialization, we can attempt to find out what faults in the socialization process cause the children in this movie to become delinquent. Furthermore, by learning what causes these faults in the socialization process, recommendations can be made to policy and law makers to pass laws which could possibly help us to improve the socialization process, which in the end would hopefully decrease hate related crimes and violence in America.
